Your gutters are incredibly important to the structure of your home, but how much care and attention do you really pay to them? Find out more about their necessity and how to protect them in our latest blog post.
What Happens If I Neglect My Gutters?
The first step in understanding gutter maintenance is understanding why it’s so important to your home. At first glance, your gutters might look like an afterthought. Strips of metal that a builder decided to throw on the side of your roof just for convenience, but this would be inaccurate. Your gutters are crucial to the foundation and structural integrity of your home.
When you neglect your gutter maintenance, a number of things can occur. Without regular cleaning, leaves, sticks, and other forms of debris will end up trapped in your gutters. When your gutters clog, this prevents water to flow freely from the slope of your roof, through your gutters, and to the ground. Instead, the water will flow over the sides of the gutters and run down the side of your home which can lead to mold growth, water damage, and deterioration.
How Often Should I Clean My Gutters?
To prevent your gutters from clogging, we recommend a regular schedule of cleaning and maintenance. It’s best to schedule cleaning at least twice a year, once at the end of spring and again at the end of fall. However, clean your gutters more frequently if you notice them clogging.
Another way to prevent your gutters from clogging is by installing a mesh cover for your gutters. This will allow water into the gutters with no problem but will prevent debris from entering. With a mesh cover, you won’t need to inspect your gutters as frequently, but we still recommend regular cleaning.
